How IPTV may appear to Users:

  • Software programs that allow TV sharing between computers/TVs
  • Hardware devices to stream TV over a network
  • Private broadcasts such as company training material
  • Video streaming from websites such as YouTube and Hulu

Types of IPTV for consumers

  • Internet TV – video sent over the Internet using the http standard
  • Video on Demand – as provided by many cable TV companies
  • True IPTV – Client-server model used to deliver the feed directly to a TV
  • Live broadcasting – Streamed using TCP/IP

ROTCC

  • On demand when and where you want it
  • Just need an Internet connection to see what IPTV is all about
  • Great for computer users with existing high-speed Internet
  • Limited to no support for users without Internet connection
  • Easy of use can vary, Internet TV is point and click whereas video conferencing is much more comples

Adoption

  • Rates are unclear as many users do not even realized they are using IPTV
  • Google remains silent about YouTube purchase, no reports on successfulness of YouTube division
  • Hulu has reported 105 million streams as of July (newteevee.com)
  • Video conferencing is increase in large corporate use but not on a consumer level

Home built IPTV systems

  • Not home-user built rather not “out of the box” purchased for business or home use
  • Many guides on the web claim it is “incredibly easy” (www.tvover.net)
  • Internal value to corporations for lower cost of ownership
  • Limited broadcast value to the home user due to bandwidth requirements
  • Schools can maintain classroom content for distance learning
  • Advertisers love IPTV to deliver animated ads to potential customers, customer cannot skip over ads due to programing design
